Printing
Adding style and strength to the branding of customers’ premium ranges can be achieved superbly in the printing process. Graphic designs created by the trm team can involve all sorts of backgrounds, colours, finishes and sometimes a metallic finish is desired. This, however, can sometimes be a costly option to run, so together with our ink supplier, trm developed an alternative ink that simulates a metallic look. Result: an up-market image is achieved to distinguish a product yet savings are made on print costs
Distribution
Another example: the re-shaping of a box for one particular customer by trm's designers meant that three extra boxes per layer were accommodated on each pallet. At nine layers high, that means 27 extra boxes, resulting in a 24% reduction in the number of pallets shipped.

Warehousing (1)
A Meatainer is a large pallet bin for the distribution of lamb shoulders, tubes of sliceable cooked meats and other bulk meat products.

Across 11 sites, the same customer was ordering 5 different sizes from 5 different suppliers.
trm's consultancy and design team have rationalised this down to just 2 sizes, in one board grade – a fit-for-purpose solution that offers our client major savings in stock levels and warehousing efficiency.
Warehousing (2)
0201 cases are used for distributing bagged and carton products such as breaded chicken nuggets and frozen chicken wings. The same customer was using no less than 20 different specifications. Thanks to the expertise of trm supply chain consultants, this has been reduced to just 3, once again reducing stock levels and increasing efficiency.

trm were asked to look at ways of insulating crates of chicken stacked onto dollies ready for despatch to KFC restaurants. Various options had been considered by the customer, including bubble wrap. The crates need to be insulated throughout the supply chain, especially during delivery by courier - several drops are made per day and each time the vehicle is opened there is potential for the chicken to rise above a specific temperature set by restaurant's strict health guidelines.

The trm solution has many benefits. It's an open top case, made in a double wall material for added insulation, which is inverted and placed over the whole crate. It's re-usable, able to make several trips until it becomes scuffed or damaged. Unlike other potential options, at the end of their tour of duty, the cases can be recycled.

Excessive downtime on the automated packing line was the problem for this customer. When trm examined what was going wrong, it was a case of too many layers of corrugated board at the corners of the pack, during make-up of the auto-erecting box, causing the machinery to jam. They say the simplest solutions are often the best! A strategically placed diamond cut has slashed costly downtime by 80%.

As a very good example of trm's knowledge of customers' operations and our ability to look at the whole packing picture, we sponsored an automated packing line for this customer. The result is improved efficiency and a dramatic reduction in labour intensity.
