Lancashire businessman is boxing clever in economic downturn

Thinking outside the box comes naturally to TRM packaging company MD Trevor Maund but this year he’s breaking new ground; bucking the gloomy economic trend with a £12m expansion plan.

Maund’s ambitious plans for his innovative design-led packaging solutions firm – which designs, prints and manufacturers cardboard packaging for a wide range of clients – will secure 227 jobs and boost its share of the £1.3bn UK corrugated market whilst continuing to meet the needs of their expanding customer base.

Up to £7m has already been invested in the business, and the growth plans are expected to increase turnover by £30m to £40m over the next three years. The expansion has been further strengthened by a £1m grant from The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA).

Unlike many of his competitors, Maund is confident that the current trading climate is a perfect time to expand. “It’s important to invest when things are difficult, because the capacity comes on stream when things get better,” he says. “During the last seven years we have always been profitable. It’s not always easy but we have always responded to changes in the marketplace.”

Maund says being flexible has been the key to the company’s success. “If you look at just one of our customers – Vion – we’ve doubled our volume and won business from our competitors. If they’ve got a problem, they bring us in to solve it. While the competition might say ‘that would be too much trouble’, as an independent we will go the extra mile.”

And the 58-year-old entrepreneur is no stranger to working through difficult times. When Maund bought the company in 2001 (then trading as Seyfert Packaging) it was in administration, but he brought it back from the brink and in just eight years turned it into a thriving business and one of Burscough’s top employers. “We’re now in a position where we can give our customers exactly what they need for many years to come,” he says. “And secure the long term future of the business; and that feels really great.”
